Buyer's Guide

Zapier alternatives, honestly compared.

Most "alternatives" pages are an advert with a table attached. This one names the cases where each option — including staying exactly where you are — is the right answer, because you will work that out in week two anyway.

First Question

Why are you leaving?

People leave Zapier for four distinct reasons, and each points at a different replacement. Picking the wrong one means migrating twice.

If the problem is…
Look at
The task bill grows every time automation succeeds
Self-hosted — AGNT or n8n
The work needs local files, private repos, or internal systems
AGNT
You need reasoning, not a fixed trigger chain
AGNT
Data cannot leave your infrastructure for compliance reasons
AGNT or self-hosted n8n
You want deeper branching, but still fully hosted
Make
A specific connector is missing
Check catalogs first — you may not need to move
The Options

Four serious alternatives

AGNT

Best for local access & AI reasoning

A local-first agent runtime rather than a hosted workflow service. Includes a visual builder, but the persistent unit is an agent with memory, tools, and a budget. Executions on your own hardware are unmetered.

Strengths

  • No per-task metering — volume is free locally
  • Reaches local files, shell, and private networks
  • Agents with memory; autonomous goal loops
  • 20+ model providers including fully local
  • Local audit receipts for every run

Tradeoffs

  • Smaller connector catalog than Zapier
  • You install and operate the runtime
  • Younger product with a smaller community
  • More technical than a no-code SaaS tool

n8n

Best for self-hosted integration work

A mature, source-available workflow automation tool that you can self-host. The closest thing to Zapier's model without Zapier's cloud, with a large node catalog and an active community.

Strengths

  • Self-hostable with no execution metering
  • Large node library and strong community
  • Excellent error handling and retry semantics
  • Well-proven for data plumbing at scale

Tradeoffs

  • Workflow-centric — agents are assembled, not native
  • No built-in autonomous goal loop
  • Server-oriented rather than a desktop app
  • Licence terms restrict some commercial resale

Make

Best hosted visual builder

If you like Zapier's model but want more sophisticated branching, iteration, and aggregation without operating anything, Make is the strongest hosted option in the category.

Strengths

  • Outstanding visual scenario designer
  • Sophisticated routing and data handling
  • Large catalog of cloud connectors
  • Zero infrastructure responsibility

Tradeoffs

  • Billed per operation — same structural issue as tasks
  • Cloud-only; no local or private network access
  • Not an agent platform

Staying on Zapier

Often the right answer

If your automation is entirely SaaS-to-SaaS, your volume fits a plan comfortably, and nobody wants to run software, migrating costs more than it saves. Switching tools has a real price in rebuilt workflows and retrained people.

Strengths

  • Largest connector catalog available
  • No infrastructure to operate at all
  • Accessible to non-technical teams
  • Mature, reliable, well documented

Tradeoffs

  • Cost scales with automation success
  • No access to local or private resources
  • Credentials and history live in the vendor's cloud
Practical Advice

Migrate the expensive edges first

The lowest-risk path is not a migration at all. Find the two or three workflows consuming the most tasks, or the ones you cannot build because they need local access, and move only those. Leave the long tail where it is.

AGNT includes a Zapier integration precisely for this — existing Zaps can trigger AGNT for the steps that need local files or real reasoning, and hand results back. You get the benefit without a rebuild, and you find out whether the change is worth it before committing to it.
