Zapier and n8n are the two names that come up first in any automation discussion, and in 2026 both have added AI agents to their workflow products. So the real question is no longer "Zapier or n8n." It is three questions:
- Where should my automation run? A vendor's cloud or my own infrastructure.
- How should I pay? Per action, per run, or flat.
- Do I need a fixed workflow or an agent that decides?
This comparison answers all three. Facts come from each vendor's pricing and licence pages, reviewed on 26 September 2026. Disclosure: AGNT, which we make, is an AI agent platform and is covered in the third column; the Zapier and n8n columns contain no claims about AGNT.
At a glance
| Zapier | n8n | AI agent platform (e.g. AGNT) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core unit | Zap: trigger → actions | Workflow: node graph | Agent with tools, plus workflows |
| Runs | Zapier's cloud | n8n Cloud or self-hosted | Varies; AGNT runs on your machine, Docker or its cloud |
| Billing unit | Task: each successful action | Execution: one full workflow run | Varies; AGNT local runs are unmetered |
| Integrations | 9,000+ apps | Large node library + HTTP | Varies; AGNT has native nodes + any MCP server |
| Licence | Proprietary SaaS | Sustainable Use Licence (fair-code) | Varies |
| Free option | 100 tasks/month | Self-hosted Community edition | AGNT Community Core (local) |
| Best for | Non-technical teams, SaaS-to-SaaS | Technical teams, complex logic, self-hosting | Judgment-heavy work, local data, receipts |
Zapier: the widest catalogue, priced per action
Zapier's strength is reach: "no-code automation across 9,000+ apps" (Zapier). If the tool your team uses exists, Zapier probably connects to it, and a non-technical person can set it up.
Pricing (26 Sep 2026):
- Free: $0, 100 tasks/month, two-step Zaps
- Professional: from $19.99/month, multi-step Zaps, webhooks, premium apps
- Team: from $69/month, 25 users, shared Zaps
How it counts: "A task is any successful action that runs in Zapier." Trigger steps, Filter and Paths steps, errored steps and built-in utilities such as Formatter, Delay and Looping do not count (Zapier Help). Zapier Agents, its AI assistants that act across those 9,000+ apps, use a separate activity quota rather than tasks.
Watch out for: per-action billing scales with workflow length × volume. A long Zap that runs often gets expensive quickly.
n8n: open workflow engine, priced per run
n8n is a node-based workflow engine you can run yourself. Its pricing page states the model plainly: "Pricing based on monthly workflow executions, regardless of complexity," and every plan includes "unlimited users & workflows and every integration" (n8n pricing).
Pricing (26 Sep 2026, billed annually; shown in euros for our region):
- Community edition: free, self-hosted
- Starter: 20/month, 2,500 executions, 5 concurrent
- Pro: 50/month, 10,000 executions
- Business: self-hosted, adds SSO/SAML/LDAP, environments and Git version control
Licence: n8n is fair-code under the Sustainable Use Licence: you may use or modify it "only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use," and files marked .ee need an enterprise licence (n8n LICENSE). Running it for your own company is fine. Reselling it as a hosted service to others is not.
Community: about 206,000 GitHub stars at the time of writing (GitHub).
Watch out for: self-hosting means you own uptime, upgrades, backups and security.
Worked example: same job, different meters
A 10-step automation (1 trigger + 9 actions) runs 1,000 times a month.
| What is counted | Monthly usage | |
|---|---|---|
| Zapier | Each successful action | ~9,000 tasks (9 actions × 1,000; the trigger is free) |
| n8n | Each full run | 1,000 executions |
| Local agent runtime (e.g. AGNT Community Core) | Nothing on the platform side | Unmetered; you pay model tokens only |
If some steps are Filters, Paths or Formatter, Zapier's count drops. The structural point stands, though: Zapier's bill grows with the number of steps, n8n's with the number of runs. Long, frequent workflows favour n8n's model; short, occasional ones are cheap anywhere.
In all three columns, AI steps also cost model tokens, billed by the model provider or through platform credits.
Where AI agents fit
Zapier and n8n are, at heart, workflow tools: you draw the path. Both have added agent features, but the design centre is the fixed path. That is ideal when the steps are known. See AI agents vs workflows for why that is usually the right default.
An agent is a different unit: you give it a goal and tools, and the model decides the steps. Anthropic describes agents as the better option "when flexibility and model-driven decision-making are needed at scale," at the price of higher cost and "the potential for compounding errors" (Anthropic, 2024).
Choose an agent platform over Zapier or n8n when:
- The job needs judgment across many steps: research, triage with exceptions, investigations.
- Your data lives locally: files, repositories, a database on localhost or a private network a SaaS runner cannot reach.
- You need an audit trail of reasoning, not just a log of which node ran.
- You want agents to remember preferences and corrections across runs.
Which should you choose?
- Non-technical team, lots of SaaS apps, modest volume: Zapier.
- Technical team, complex logic or high volume, want to self-host: n8n.
- Judgment-heavy work, local data, or agents that must show their work: an agent platform.
- Many teams: a mix. Keep existing Zaps and flows, and hand the judgment-heavy steps to an agent.
Where AGNT sits
Disclosure: AGNT is our product. AGNT is a local-first agent runtime with a visual workflow builder: agents with memory, tool lists and credit limits; workflows with triggers, branches and per-node logs; and goals for open-ended work. Local execution is not metered, so ten runs and ten thousand runs cost the same in platform fees. Community Core is free for personal use, education, nonprofits and businesses under $1M revenue and 10 people. Where the others are better: Zapier's connector breadth, and n8n's maturity as a pure workflow engine. Detailed pages: AGNT vs Zapier, AGNT vs n8n, Zapier alternatives, n8n alternatives.
FAQ
Is n8n cheaper than Zapier?
For long or frequent workflows, usually yes, because n8n charges per execution regardless of steps while Zapier charges per successful action. For a few short automations, both are inexpensive.
Is n8n open source?
n8n is fair-code under the Sustainable Use Licence: the source is available and free to self-host for internal business or personal use, but it is not an OSI-approved open-source licence, and commercial resale is restricted.
Can Zapier or n8n build AI agents?
Both now offer AI agent features. Zapier Agents run on a separate activity quota. Their core design is still the predefined workflow, which suits known processes best.
Should I replace Zapier with an AI agent?
Rarely all at once. Keep workflows for fixed processes and move the steps that need judgment to an agent.
